Dr Tony Tranfield D.O. (Osteopath)
Osteopathic Neuro-Rehabilitation
Dr Tony Tranfield is an Osteopath with a special interest in neurological rehabilitation, and in particular, the rehabilitation of posture, movement and balance. He has had a practice in on Sydney’s Northern Beaches since 1999.
He was certified in the USA with the American Chiropractic Neurology Board (ACNB). Chiropractic neurology is a training for physical health care and medical professionals in functional neurological applications. Functional neurological applications, means assessment of the nervous system in relation to physiological as well as pathological condition. For example, in the case of deteriorating postural stability, this would mean, assessment and treatment of afferent systems that show signs of degradation but are not necessarily in a state of pathological change.
Assessing functional change (muscle tone, reflexes and postural stability for instance) can be very subjective. For this reason, he uses computerised posturography for accurate measurement of postural sway. Postural sway can be used as a biomarker for postural integrity and for the differential diagnosis of the integrity of its afferent systems.
Computerised posturography is used in research but is still very rarely applied in physical health care as an assessment and rehabilitation tool. As well as validated testing protocols, such as the modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance (mCTSIB) computerised posturography can measure any movement that can be translated into a vertical plane. As such it can be used for measuring reaction times, motor planning, efficiency of execution (undershooting, overshooting and route to target), velocity, acceleration and power. This is very useful for accurate assessment and well as treatment planning, outcome measurement and documentation.

The ACNB’s Diplomate program has achieved accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Dr Tranfield is presently the only osteopath in Australia with this qualification.
